UNS S34700 round bar is a columbium stabilized austenitic stainless steel which has good general corrosion resistance and little better resistance in strong oxidizing conditions. It has excellent intergranular corrosion resistance after exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 800 – 1500°F. The alloy has good oxidation resistance and creep strength to 1500°F.

It also possess good low temperature toughness. Alloy 347H/ UNS S34709 has high carbon version of alloy. It is develop for enhance creep resistance and for high strength at temperature above 1000°F. In most condition the carbon element of plate enable dual certification. It can only be harden by cold working and not by heat treatment. It can be easily welded and processed by conventional fabrication practices.

Stainless steel 347 vs 347h

Stainless steel 347 and 347H is general purpose of austenitic stainless steel along with face center cubic structure. In the annealed condition it is nonmagnetic and it can only be harden by cold working.

Niobium has been added to defeat grain boundary chromium carbide precipitation. 347H stainless steel is higher carbon version of ASTM A276 gr 347 rod. Due to additional carbon available in 347H, it is tougher and usually more durable compared to SS 347 hex bar.

Chemical Composition

Alloy 347 bar contains minimum 0.08% carbon whereas 347H stainless steel contain carbon between the ranges of 0.04% – 0.10%. Both contain chromium between the range of 17.0% to 20.0% and minimum 2.0% manganese. They are made of between 9.0% and 13.0% nickel.

AISI 347 square bar contain at most 0.04% phosphorous while 347H only contain up to 0.03% phosphorous. It is also comprise of no more than 0.30% sulfur, at most 0.75% silicon and at most 1.0% niobium. Niobium gives it some of its unique properties.

347 SS Round Bar Applications

It is commonly use for fabrication of equipment which is use under severe corrosive conditions as it is common in the chemical and petroleum refining industry. It also have applications in the manufacturing of boiler tubes and casing, heat exchangers and tube, radiant super heaters, and high pressure steam pipes.

Another common application for it is in production of heavy wall-welded equipment, cabin heater and in aerospace industry. It is valuable in food processing industry, whether it been in equipment or storage vessels. For similar reasons, it is also used in the pharmaceutical industry.
