ASTM A276 type 321 rod properties

It is a stabilized stainless steel which provides excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion following exposure to temperature in the chromium carbide precipitation range from 800 – 1500°F. It is stabilized against chromium carbide formation by addition of titanium.

It is continuously employed for prolonged service in 800 – 1500° F temperature range. It is so advantageous for high temperature service due to its good mechanical properties. It provides high creep and stress rupture properties.

It is highly characterize by high corrosion resistance in general atmospheric corrosive environments it offers excellent resistance to most oxidizing agents, general foodstuffs, dyestuffs, sterilizing solutions, hot petroleum gases, steam combustion gases, nitric acid, and to sulfuric acid.

It exhibit excellent oxidation resistance at elevate temperature and has excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion and excellent weldability. It cannot be harden by thermal treatment but strength and hardness can be increase by cold working with reduction in ductility.

321 stainless steel vs 304

Both stainless steel 304 and 321 belongs to the Austenitic 300 stainless steel series. They are similar in corrosion resistance, strength, hardness and welding performance, but stainless steel 321 is mostly used in the heat resistance condition i.e. of 500-600 ℃. Stainless steel 304 is alternative to stainless steel 321 where intergranular corrosion resistance rather than high temperature strength is needed.

So, SS 321 hex bar is a new version based on 304 stainless steel grade by adding titanium to improve its corrosion resistance of grain boundary and high temperature strength. As a stabilizing element, titanium controls the formation of chromium carbide, successfully, by making SS 321 has a robust high-temperature strength, even much better compared to SS 304.

A larger element of nickel makes ASTM A276 type 321 flat bar offer good abrasion resistance in different temperatures and concentrations of organic acids, particularly in oxidizing media. 321 SS square bar has better stress rupture and creep resistance stress mechanical property compared to 304 stainless steel.
